The four regions of Ireland

Last week a friend of mine asked me about the counties or provinces of Éire. So I decided to write this short article to tell him that Ireland has four main counties:

  • Ulster (North)
  • Connacht or Connaught (West)
  • Munster (South)
  • Leinster (East)
He asked me also to tell him about the name of these counties in Irish or Gaelic. Therefore, I can tell you that the names of the four regions or "cúigí" (KOO-ig-ee) are:

  • Cúige Connacht (KOO-ig-e KOHN-uhk*t), Connaught
  • Cúige Mumhan (KOO-ig-e MOO-uhn), Munster
  • Cúige Uladh (U-luh), Ulster
  • Cúige Laighean (LEYE-uhn), Leinster

Thanks a lot, David. Laster gonbitea jasoko duzue euskarazko bertsioan eta ingelesean editatu ahal izateko Irlandatik bertatik. Sistema oso erraza da eta nahi ditugu bertako albisteak ere, nola ez. Eskerrik asko zure komentario elebidunagatik. Goraintziak emazteari eta seme-alabei. We will be in contact via these four weblogs... but remember, each language has its blog. That is the rule. St. Patrick and Celtic Gods protect you, hendersondarrok!
